"Departure From Medium" essay for FRC 14

Watercolour Society is a freeform painting meetup as well as a popup gallery. This formed in late 2021 in an effort to reconnect artists in person after the absence of face-to-face interaction in the art world. Watercolor has a certain silliness to it (as well as the British spelling)—a medium that conjures images of children’s arts & crafts and hobbyist retirees. The evolution of this group has surpassed such assumptions, and proven that the medium is not only relevant; it is active and inherently social.

Easy to carry around, to fill sketchbooks with, and to use anywhere, watercolor is truly the adventurer’s medium. It's a way to get something from painting that you can’t get from the studio, which is that real time interaction with the place that you live. It just so happens that there is a real community of artists in New York that are exploring watercolor as part of their practice.
